Make a Memory Foam Bed

Memory Foam Bed Bargains.Com is a website that grew out of one individual’s experience with debilitating lower back pain and a journey that led to a simple solution. My belief in the health benefits of memory foam beds is so strong I had to share my own personal story about them.

In my youth I could sleep on almost anything with no adverse effects (couldn’t we all). I could sleep on a soft bed, a hard bed, a couch, the floor, or scrunched up on a sofa chair. Never did I wake up with any back pain as a result of what I was sleeping on.

Flash forward several decades later. Little by little I started developing lower back pain. The pain was small and insignificant at first. As I would wake up and become more active in the day the pain went away. I concluded I just needed a little limbering up, some activity after being asleep and then all was well. As time went on, each day after I would wake up, the pain became more acute and lasted longer into the day. I could not figure out why this was happening. I worked in an office environment and did no heavy lifting or any physical activity that was abusive to my back.

I accepted it as fate, concluded I was just getting older and I would have to accept it. This problem slowly grew until one day I could barely get out of bed. The pain was excruciating! I had to slowly roll onto my stomach and with my knees on the floor slowly stand up. That was it, I had to do something. I had heard of spinal decompression as a treatment for lower back pain but since it was not covered by my insurance I could not afford it. I had heard of inversion tables accomplishing a similar effect so I immediately went out and purchased a cheap one for about one hundred dollars. After about one week of using the inversion table, hanging upside down 20 – 40 minutes a day, I started to feel an improvement.

With some of my mobility back I immediately gave my bed a good inspection. I noticed the mattress was slightly concave in the middle, like a very shallow bowl. I am also one of those people who tend to sleep on their stomach. Imagine what that did to my back over the years. Lying on my stomach on a slightly concave, bowl-shaped mattress. The shape and stress my spine must have been enduring, and the damage. Who would ever have thought the natural act of sleeping would have been the cause of so much pain.

I immediately threw my bed in the trash, mattress, frame and all. Good riddance. After much investigation I decided to try a memory foam bed, but whoa! The price. They were outrageous to me. Thousands of dollars. I wondered why should an all-foam mattress cost so much? After all it is just a piece of foam.

I had to find an alternative. With some investigation and ingenuity I found I could purchase the raw materials myself and put together my own memory foam bed saving thousands of dollars.

I did just that. The four foam layers I needed cost about $500 and the materials I needed to make the platform frame cost about $100. Pictures and step-by-step instructions are included in this website if you are a do-it-yourselfer and want to save a bunch of money.

With my new memory foam bed complete I was about to gain a new lease on life. I also had to start changing my sleeping habits a little. More sleeping on my back and less on my stomach.

I stopped using the inversion table and with my new bed and changed sleeping habits my back pain went away completely after several months.

Now, I am no doctor, this is just one person’s experience. But I am a very strong advocate of memory foam beds. They are worth every penny. We spend roughly one third of our life in bed, we owe it to ourselves to make sure our sleep time heals us, not injures us.

Memory Foam-What Makes it So Special?

The story of memory foam is well known these days. Memory foam originated at NASA in the 1960’s and 1970’s out of a need to improve aircraft cushions. Technically it is made from polyurethane modified to increase its viscosity and density. It is popularly referred to as visco-elastic polyurethane foam. Its open cell structure and [...]

High Density Memory Foam

The cut-off density value that separates high density memory foam from low density memory foam seems to generally be around 5 pounds per cubic foot (PCF).
Any memory foam mattress with a density value of 5 and above falls into the category of high density. Compared to low density memory foam, high density memory foam has [...]

Low Density Memory Foam

Any memory foam mattress with a density value below 5 pounds per cubic foot (PCF) falls into the category of low density memory foam.
Low density memory foam layers are softer than the high density layers and are usually used as the upper most top layer of the mattress. The more expensive memory foam mattresses use [...]

Conventional Foam Base Layers

You might be suprised to learn that a memory foam mattress contains a layer or layers of conventional foam underneath the memory foam layers. This is because memory foam is too soft to use for the complete mattress, something is needed to support the memory foam and distribute the weight or else the user would [...]

High IFD Conventional Foam

High quality conventional foam is used for the bottom layer of a memory foam mattress. There are no springs at all, no separate box spring mattress or foundation like a conventional mattress.
This base layer serves to distribute the weight over a wide area and keeps the user from bottoming out on the platform frame.
The optimum [...]

Conventional Eggcrate Foam

Sometimes you see an eggcrate layer (convoluted) in a memory foam mattress and sometimes you do not. The idea is to allow some air ventilation between the bottom layers of conventional foam and the top layers of memory foam. Most of the high-end memory foam mattresses have this feature.
Like the bottom base layer this layer [...]

Made In China Memory Foam

There is a lot of memory foam coming from China these days. I do not believe they make quality memory foam yet. The quality of memory foam is based on many factors such as: the manufacturer, proprietary formulas and processes, density values, firmness determinations, and thickness. High density values (4 - 7 PCF) is what makes [...]
