High IFD Conventional Foam
High quality conventional foam is used for the bottom layer of a memory foam mattress. There are no springs at all, no separate box spring mattress or foundation like a conventional mattress.
This base layer serves to distribute the weight over a wide area and keeps the user from bottoming out on the platform frame.
High IFD Conventional Foam – specifications
The optimum thickeness for this bottom layer is around 4 – 6 inches thick. I recommend a high quality conventional foam base with the following specifications.
Density: 2 – 3 PCF (remember this is conventional foam and does not have the unique higher density values like memory foam).
IFD: 45 -55. This high IFD value is what makes this material ideal for the base support.
