Memory Foam Mattress Toppers

Should you buy a memory foam mattress topper? They are becoming quite popular these days because they are less expensive than a complete memory foam mattress. In fact, you can now buy pillows and slippers with this visco elastic foam inside them. A good memory foam mattress can cost thousands of dollars whereas a memory foam topper can be less than $100. Many people erroneously believe they can reap the same benefits of a memory foam bed by buying a cheap topper and throwing it on top of a conventional mattress. But will this provide the same benefits?

Memory Foam Mattress Toppers – Substitute For a Memory Foam Bed?

First of all consider why memory foam beds have become popular and why so many people are willing to spend thousands of dollars for them. For many people, as they age they begin to wake up in the morning with lower back pain and to the disbelief of many of these people the cause of their back pain may very will be due to a bad bed.

In most cases the culprit is the mattress itself. Even thought it may not be visible to the naked eye, over time many conventional mattresses begin to develop a slightly concave bowl-shape to them. The result of years of supporting your body weight. And most people do not sleep completely still, they move and shift positions while sleeping. Many people will spend most of their time sleeping on their side or on their stomach. If your conventional mattress has a slightly concave bowl-like shape to it imagine what it is doing to your spine when you sleep on your side or stomach. Over the years this can result in severe back pain in the morning.

This is why many people have switched to a memory foam mattress. They may not conform perfectly to your shape like the commercials show, but they do much better in conforming to your shape than a conventional mattress. This results in better health for your back.

But what about toppers? Will putting a memory foam mattress pad on a conventional mattress help to relieve back pain if you are one of those people? I would say certainly not. If you suffer from back pain in the morning as a result of a bad mattress I would recommend a quality memory foam mattress with a platform frame.

Memory Foam Mattress Toppers – Conclusions

Then who benefits from toppers? Well, not everyone wakes up in the morning with lower back pain. I would only recommend a topper for these people. Putting a memory foam topper on a conventional mattress will certainly provide an extra layer of comfort but don’t let anyone convince you it will perform like a true memory foam mattress.

If you are thinking about purchasing a memory foam topper I would recommend it be 2-3 inches thick and have a density of 5 PCF (pounds per cubic feet). A memory foam topper with a PCF value around 3 is too low and will be not perform any better than conventional foam.
