Many people do not appreciate the importance of a platform frame for the proper performance of a memory foam bed. In fact, when a lot of people first make the transition from a conventional bed to a memory foam bed they look for a way to cut costs, especially since a good memory foam mattress can be so expensive. They want to make sure they get a quality memory foam mattress at the expense of a new frame.

What they tend to do is purchase just the memory foam mattress and place it directly on top of their existing box spring mattress. After all, this does save them quite a bit of money and the costs of purchasing a completely new bed and frame together is enough to prevent some people from making the transition. Do not make this mistake. If you are going to purchase a memory foam mattress and not a new platform frame to go with it then at least by a 3/4 inch piece of plywood or something to go under your memory foam mattress. Whatever you do you need a hard, flat, rigid structure underneath that will not produce any movement.

Homemade Platform Frame for a Memory Foam Bed

Below are several pictures of the platform bed I built myself in my basement. Now, I am certainly not a professional designer or carpenter. I will be the first to admit the platform frame I built has no finesse. It is a very simple design, simple to build, and a very strong and sturdy frame. I hate flimsy furniture. I assure you this platform bed will last you a long time. My aim was simplicity and speed.

The materials I needed to build this frame only cost around $100.
